Becca Harrington is a reject. After being rebuffed by every college on her list, she needs a fresh start, so she packs up everything and moves to LA, giving herself one year to land an acting gig or kill herself trying.
Unfortunately, not everything turns out as planned, and after a few grueling months, LA is looking like the worst idea ever. As hard as she tries, Becca can’t land an agent, she’s running out of cash, and her mom is hounding her to apply to more schools. In an act of desperation, Becca and her friend Marisol start posting short videos online—with the help of their adorable filmmaker neighbor, Raj—and the videos catch the attention of a TV producer. Could this be it? Her big break? Or will she have to move back home with nothing but some bad head shots and a monstrous credit-card bill?
Becca may not get the Hollywood ending she was hoping for, but perhaps she’ll learn there’s more than one way to achieve her dream.
Readers will love every page of this funny, romantic, aspirational, and ultimately triumphant novel about a girl who just wants to make it on her own
Hi all! Welcome to my stop on the Hello, Sunshine blog tour. I’m super excited to be on the tour for this book and have Leila Howland stop by to share her dream cast for the book. Hello, Sunshine was such a delight to read, especially because I just moved to Los Angeles and could relate to a few of the adjustments that the main character, Becca Harrington, goes through when she moves to LA in search of fame. I loved the characters in the book and when I saw Leila Howland’s dream cast, I completely agreed with all of her choices and there may have also been some squealing involved…
Without further ado, here is Leila’s amazing dream cast for Hello, Sunshine:
Talk about dreamy! The Theory of Everything actress has the all the charm, quirk, and soulfulness that a writer could hope for! I can totally see her bringing Becca to the big screen. Felicity has a winsome quality that Becca shares. At the same time there’s fierce intelligence in her eyes. And while Felicity is gorgeous, her authenticity allows her to play an everygirl effortlessly. Becca doesn’t have that Hollywood look that stops traffic–especially not L.A. traffic, but her beauty is real, shimmering just under the surface. She’s thoughtful, complex, and dogged when it comes to achieving her dream, and Felicity would be perfect for the part.
First of all, how cute would Felicity and Dev look together? So. Flipping. Cute. My Dev Patel crush started with Slumdog Millionaire, and it just keeps growing. He has this magical combination of debonaire and vulnerable. Don’t you just want to run your fingers through that wild hair? Dev might have to get a haircut for the role because Raj’s handsomeness is subtle and understated. Raj is an introvert and Dev plays quiet with such depth and dynamism. He’s our guy!
Marisol has sweetness on lock, but she’s also got a bit of an edge. She’s incredibly commercial looking and a natural in front of the camera, which contrasts with Becca’s more off beat look and demeanor. Her confidence, humor, and attitude make her instantly attractive as a friend to Becca. Enter… Selena Gomez. She has a baby-faced allure and, at the same time, can rock orange lipstick and a fashion-forward outfit. I love that she owns her accomplishments and her growing experiences. Also, she’s besties with Taylor Swift so she must make a good teammate!
Alex, Becca’s ex, doesn’t get a lot of “screen time” in the book, but he looms large in her mind as the perfect guy who got away. How could he not? He was her first love and he broke her heart. And then he went to Stanford. I have admired Jesse Plemons’ work since Friday Night Lights and loved his turn in Breaking Bad. I think he’d nail the role of brilliant and almost helplessly condescending Alex.
Okay, so this may seem odd because I think Bradley was voted sexiest man alive at some point and there’s no way on earth that Becca thinks her neighbor F*cky is in any way attractive! That would be a totally different book! However, Bradley has an intensity that Becca’s neighbor has. He plays half-crazed really well, and he can be really funny too! (Did you see Wet Hot American Summer?) It makes me laugh to think about Bradley delivering F*cky’s lines, and ultimately, his pearls of wisdom. Also fun fact–we went to Georgetown together!
Thank you so much, Leila, for stopping by the blog and sharing your dream cast!
